Support the Local Farm Economy
Be aware--farming is a business! Living next to a farm is not the same as living next to open space protected by a conservation district, state or local park. Farming practices often generate noise, dust, traffic and related operational effects. New residents, unfamiliar with farming operations, often challenge routine farming operations being used on adjoining farmland.
- In Illinois, laws protect the farmers' "right to farm."
- Farm operations are enterprises that operate 365 days a year.
- Raw materials are shipped in, processed, and shipped out as value-added products.
- Production processes involve activities that generate waste products like noise and odors; farming operations may involve the use of pesticides, herbicides and machinery; and may operate beyond "regular business hours."
- Farmland is private property, not public space available for four-wheeling, snowmobiling or other recreational activities, unless the landowner has specifically granted permission to use the land.
